Espacio Tormaleo is an SME developing a singular recovery project in the southwest of Asturias (Spain), by promoting different equipments and infrastructure combining leisure, tourism, culture and entrepreneurship to transform Tormaleo, Ibias municipality and the surrounding area in a hub for rural economic development, thus promoting a viable future to a highly degraded territory with a huge demographic loss (45% population loss in this century) and in the process of a just transition away from coal mining activities. The whole area is of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias Natural Park, Biosphere reserve and part of the Natura 2000 network. The organisation works on three different levels: 1) Developing the investment project; 2) Supporting the local community, municipality, and the area to foster their economic development based on a number of initiatives in areas like sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, social innovation, education & training and entrepreneurship,; 3) Cooperating with other entities and organizations in Europe to exchange knowledge, develop new tools and methods and elaborate best practices for sustainable cultural tourism. Since its creation in August 2021, ESPTOR has been involved in a number of activities in the field of sustainable cultural tourism, including a project to use abandoned ethnographic and cultural heritage assets as containers for sustainable cultural tourism activities.
